Functional Elements of a Pressure Regulator

Do you know that a pressure regulator is a functional element of an essential component in many industries?

Accurate and consistent control of flow and pressure is crucial for the excellent performance and safety of many critical fluid systems and applications.

People working in energy production, semiconductor fabrication, chemical engineering, manufacturing and testing industry extremely rely on a digital pressure regulator for the correct happening of various processes.

In past, the operator has to manually adjust the pressure of a fluid or gas by going near the regulator.

But nowadays they can easily maintain the required value of pressure by sending an electric signal to the digital pressure controller.

Although, mechanical regulators are not good for high-tech applications.

Have a look at the following functional elements of a pressure regulator:

Functional Elements & Working Principle of a Pressure Regulator

1. Pressure Reducing Element

A digital pressure regulator contains a valve which functions as a restrictive element for controlling the pressure of the fluid.

It is also known as a poppet. It contains an elastomeric or thermoplastic seal.

Further, when the springs put a force to move the seal away from the seat, fluid flows from the inlet of the electronically controlled pressure regulator.

As the output pressure increases the sensing element sense this change and the valve is closed in order to prevent the outlet pressure from exceeding the set pressure limit.

2. Sensing Element

This is an important element as it senses the pressure changes. When the gas or fluid passes through this element, it senses the pressure changes.

It then, informs the control element about these changes so that the pressure change can be controlled timely.

It serves as a physical link between the control element of the electronic pressure regulator and the pressure-reducing element.

Nowadays, three types of sensing elements are available such as bellows, diaphragm and piston.

3. Pressure Control Element

The control element is responsible for maintaining the required pressure in a system.

This element reads the received signal of the sensing element and tells the pressure-reducing element.

These actions need to be carried out for keeping the pressure equal to the set value.

It allows the reducing element to make real-time changes in the opening of the valve to keep the outlet pressure of the electronic regulator equal to the set value.

When a microcontroller or PLC is used with the regulator then it enables the user to control the pressure dynamically.

Meanwhile, a pressure transducer forms a closed-loop control device and provides a feedback signal.

Further, this control element reads that feedback signal and after that, it maintains this pressure with the help of the load element.

Final Words

A digital pressure regulator plays a key role in achieving optimal performance and repeatability.

The collaboration of the above-listed elements help it to maintain the set value of the pressure in a fluid system.

By doing so it lets the system to operate efficiently as well as enhance the lifespan of the system.
