25 Quick Ways to Deal With Stress and Depression
What do you do when life gives you so many reasons to give up, but you still have one reason to keep going?
There was a time in my life when I was battling with so much that, looking back now, I can only describe it as extraordinary.
Not because the situation was beautiful, but because God came through for me in ways I never imagined.
Whenever I remember how far God has brought me, I can’t help but worship and give thanks to my Maker.
As a very young woman, I battled with depression, stress, loneliness, and the overwhelming pressure that comes with trying to survive when life doesn’t go according to plan.
I had no parents nor a life partner.
I had a baby, my beautiful daughter, and so many responsibilities resting on my shoulders.
You can imagine what I was going through.
I had no certificate that could help me secure the kind of job I wanted, so I took whatever honest work I could find.
I worked in a factory and as a salesgirl, doing what I had to do because bills don’t wait for you to feel better.
There was house rent to pay, feeding, bills; there were school fees for my daughter.
And there was me, trying to hold everything together while silently fighting battles nobody could see.
There were days when I became so overwhelmed that I asked myself a painful question:
“What am I living for?”
But whenever I looked at my daughter, something inside me would tell me, “You have to keep going.”
I thought about her future and about the kind of life I wanted her to have.
I didn’t want her to experience the same struggles I had experienced.
Even when I felt like I had nothing left, I knew I couldn’t give up because there was a little girl looking up to me.
So I kept going.
But something eventually changed everything for me.
I realised that I didn’t create myself. I didn’t just appear on this earth by accident.
There is a God who created me, a God who knows me, a God who sees my struggles, and a God who cares about me.
In this post, I will share 25 practical things you can do to manage stress, cope with difficult emotions, and begin finding your strength again.
-
Take a Break and Give Your Mind Some Rest

Sometimes, you feel like you are falling apart simply because you have been carrying too much for too long.
You don’t always have to keep pushing yourself.
Give your body and mind permission to rest, even if it is only for a few minutes.
Put your phone away, take a walk, sit somewhere quiet, listen to soft music, or simply close your eyes and breathe.
I know that life does not always give you the luxury of taking a long break;
Especially when you are constantly researching Side Hustles to Make Money While You Sleep or managing endless responsibilities waiting for you, but even small moments of rest can help.
Rest is not laziness; your body and mind need time to recover.
-
Talk to Someone You Trust
Depression and stress can become heavier when you keep everything inside.
Sometimes you don’t need someone to solve all your problems; you simply need someone who will listen without judging you.
Find a trusted friend, family member, mentor, pastor, counsellor, or someone you feel safe talking to and tell them how you truly feel.
Don’t always say, “I’m fine,” when you know you are not.
There were things I carried silently because I didn’t know how to explain what was happening inside me, but I later learned that talking about your struggles does not make you weak.
You don’t have to suffer in silence.
-
Don’t Isolate Yourself
When you are depressed, staying alone can sometimes feel easier because you don’t have to answer questions or pretend that everything is okay.
However, completely isolating yourself can sometimes make negative thoughts even louder. Try to stay connected to people who genuinely care about you.
You don’t have to attend every gathering or force yourself to be cheerful; even a simple phone conversation or spending time with someone you trust can make a difference.
Sometimes, the right person can remind you of something you temporarily forgot about yourself.
-
Pray About What Is Troubling You

One of the biggest turning points in my own life was realising that there were certain things I couldn’t fix with my own strength.
I started talking to my Maker and praying about my fears, my future, my daughter, my finances, and the things that kept me awake at night.
Prayer gave me somewhere to place the burdens I could no longer carry by myself. If you believe in God, don’t underestimate the power of prayer.
You don’t need complicated words or a perfect prayer. Talk to God honestly and tell Him exactly how you feel. Cry if you need to, ask questions, and give Him your fears.
Sometimes the first step toward peace is simply saying, “God, I need You.”
-
Listen to Uplifting Gospel Songs
There were moments when I couldn’t find the right words to explain how I felt, but worship helped me express what was inside my heart.
Listening to uplifting gospel songs can remind you of God’s goodness, faithfulness, and promises when your mind is filled with negative thoughts.
Put on your favourite gospel songs while doing your housework, getting ready for work, travelling, or simply sitting alone.
Sing along if you can. Worship even when you don’t feel like it.
Your problems may still be there after the song ends.
Confronting these Emotional Facts About Life through worship can change your perspective and remind you that your problems are not bigger than God.
-
Find a Bible-Believing Church Community

Don’t underestimate the importance of having the right people around you, especially when you are going through a difficult season.
When I began taking my relationship with God seriously, I started going to church, studying my Bible, and becoming involved in the work of the church.
I wasn’t simply looking for somewhere to sit every Sunday; I wanted to grow spiritually and surround myself with people who would encourage my faith.
Find a Bible-believing church where God’s Word is taught and where you can find genuine support, encouragement, prayer, and healthy community.
You don’t have to walk through every difficult season alone.
-
Write Down What Is Bothering You
When too many things are happening in your mind at the same time, your thoughts can become overwhelming.
One simple thing you can try is writing down what is bothering you.
Write down what is stressing you, what you are afraid of, what you can control, what you cannot control, and what needs your attention today.
Putting your thoughts on paper can help you organise them instead of allowing everything to run around in your head.
You may even discover that some of the things worrying you can be handled one step at a time.
You don’t have to solve your entire life today; sometimes you only need to deal with today.
-
Take Care of Your Body

Your mental and physical health are connected, so don’t completely neglect your body when life becomes stressful.
Try to eat properly, drink enough water, get enough sleep, and move your body regularly.
You don’t necessarily need an expensive gym membership; you can take a walk, stretch, dance to your favourite song, or exercise at home.
When you are busy taking care of work, children, family, and other responsibilities, it is easy to forget yourself. But remember that you matter too.
Taking care of yourself is not selfish; it is part of taking care of your overall well-being.
-
Stop Comparing Your Life With Other People’s Lives
Social media can make comparison even more difficult because you constantly see other people’s achievements, relationships, businesses, houses, cars, vacations, and seemingly perfect lives.
Before you know it, you begin asking yourself, “What am I doing with my life?”
I have had moments when my circumstances made me wonder why my life wasn’t moving the way I wanted it to, but I learned that comparison can make you forget how far you have already come.
Your journey is different from someone else’s, so don’t allow another person’s progress to make you feel like a failure.
Instead, shift your focus back to your own growth and embrace meaningful Ways To Show Gratitude To God for the unique path you are walking.
Remember that you don’t know everything that person has gone through to get where they are.
-
Remember Why You Must Keep Going

There was a time when I became so overwhelmed by everything happening in my life that I asked myself, “What am I living for?” But whenever I looked at my daughter, I knew I had to keep going.
I thought about her future and the kind of life I wanted her to have, and I didn’t want her to suffer the way I had suffered.
She became one of the reasons I refused to give up completely.
Maybe your reason is your child, your dream, your family, your future, or simply the belief that your life can become better than it is today.
Find something worth holding on to, and if you cannot see it clearly right now, just focus on getting through today.
You don’t have to have your entire life figured out before you decide to keep going.
-
Ask God to Show You Who You Are
Sometimes depression becomes worse when you lose your sense of identity and begin wondering who you really are and whether your life has any meaning.
I believe one of the most important prayers you can pray is, “God, show me who You created me to be.”
Instead of only asking God to change your circumstances, ask Him to reveal your gifts, your strengths, your purpose, and the assignment He has placed in your hands.
You are not here by accident. God created you for a reason, and sometimes finding yourself again begins with going back to the One who created you.
-
Discover Your Purpose and Begin Walking in It

There is something beautiful about knowing that your life has meaning.
When you begin to understand your purpose, you can start to feel seen and realise that your life is about more than simply waking up, going to work, paying bills, eating, sleeping, and repeating the same routine.
Purpose can bring joy, direction, and something meaningful to wake up for.
Your purpose may not become clear overnight, so don’t pressure yourself to figure everything out immediately.
Ask yourself what you are naturally good at, what problems you enjoy solving, who you want to help, and what dream keeps returning to your heart.
Take those questions to God and allow Him to guide you.
-
Take Steps Toward Your Dreams
Don’t only dream about the life you want; start taking small steps toward it.
You may not have enough money right now, you may not have all the qualifications, and you may not have the right connections, but that doesn’t mean you should stop.
Take that course, learn that skill, go back to school, start that small business, apply for that job, write down your plan, save a little money, or make that phone call.
I know this personally because I have gone back to school and I am also running my own business today.
It reminds me that the things you are praying and working toward may not happen overnight, but progress begins when you take the first step. As Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
You don’t have to depend only on your own strength.
-
Stop Speaking Negatively About Yourself
When you are stressed or depressed, your mind can become your biggest critic.
You may start telling yourself that you are not good enough, that nothing good will happen to you, that you are already behind, or that you cannot succeed.
Be careful about the things you constantly say to yourself. There was a time when I looked at my circumstances and felt like my dreams were too far away, but my story did not end there.
Today, I have gone back to school and I am building my own business. I am still growing, but I have learned not to allow my difficult season to define my entire life.
Start speaking hope over yourself and focus on what you can do today.

Practice Gratitude

Gratitude may not immediately remove your problems, but it can change what you choose to focus on.
When everything seems to be going wrong, your mind naturally wants to count everything you don’t have, but try counting what you do have.
Be grateful for your life, your children, your abilities, the people who love you, the opportunities you still have, and even the simple gift of waking up another day.
Whenever I remember where I started and look at where I am now, I can’t help but worship and give thanks to my Maker.
There are still things I am praying for, but I have learned not to allow what I don’t have to make me blind to what God has already done.
-
Forgive Yourself for Past Mistakes
Sometimes the person holding you back isn’t someone else; it is you.
You keep remembering your past mistakes, wrong decisions, missed opportunities, and things you wish you had done differently.
But you cannot change yesterday. Learn from your past, but don’t allow it to become the place where you permanently live.
You are allowed to grow, become wiser, make better decisions, and start again.
Your past may be part of your story, but it does not have to control your future.
-
Set Healthy Boundaries
You cannot carry everybody’s problems while trying to solve your own.
Sometimes stress comes from constantly saying yes when you desperately need to say no.
You don’t have to be available to everyone all the time, and you don’t have to keep people around you simply because you have known them for a long time.
Learn to protect your peace and recognise when a relationship, responsibility, or situation is becoming too much for you.
Setting healthy boundaries is not selfish; sometimes it is necessary for your emotional wellbeing.
-
Spend Time Studying the Bible
If your faith is important to you, make God’s Word part of your daily life.
Don’t only open your Bible when you are in trouble; read it when you are happy, confused, discouraged, or simply trying to understand what God wants for your life.
When I began spending more time studying the Bible, I started understanding more about God and myself.
His Word reminded me that my circumstances did not determine my identity.
As I grew in my relationship with Jesus, something began changing inside me, and I realised that God wasn’t only working on my situation; He was working on me.

Surround Yourself With People Who Encourage You
The people around you can influence your mindset more than you realise.
If you constantly surround yourself with people who tell you that nothing will work, eventually you may begin believing them.
Find people who encourage you, genuinely want to see you grow, celebrate your progress, correct you with love, and pray with you.
This is another reason a healthy Bible-believing church community can be valuable.
You need people who can walk with you through difficult seasons and remind you of your worth when you temporarily forget it.
-
Don’t Be Afraid to Seek Professional Help

Faith and professional help can work together.
Prayer is important, but seeking help from a qualified mental health professional when you need it does not mean that you don’t trust God.
Sometimes you need someone who is trained to help you understand what you are experiencing and provide healthy ways to cope.
If depression is persistent, affecting your ability to function, or becoming overwhelming, please talk to a doctor, therapist, counsellor, or another qualified professional.
If you ever feel that you may hurt yourself or you don’t feel safe, seek immediate help from someone you trust or an emergency service.
Your life is valuable.
-
Learn to Say No When You Are Overwhelmed

You cannot do everything at once, and trying to do so can leave you emotionally and physically exhausted.
When you have work, family responsibilities, school, business, and other things demanding your attention, learn to prioritise.
Ask yourself what truly needs to be done today and deal with that first. You don’t have to finish everything in one day.
Whether you are building a career, running a business, raising children, or pursuing your education, take things one step at a time.
You are building a life, not competing in a race.
-
Do Something That Makes You Happy

Life cannot be only about responsibilities.
Find something that makes you smile and gives you a reason to enjoy your day.
Listen to music, dance, read, take a walk, spend time with people you love;
Work on your business, learn something new, or simply enjoy time with your children.
Sometimes we become so focused on surviving that we forget how to live.
You deserve moments of happiness too, even while you are still working through difficult things.
-
Celebrate Small Victories
Don’t wait until everything is perfect before you celebrate yourself.
If you completed something you’ve been postponing, celebrate it.
If you saved some money, learned a new skill, applied for a job, acknowledge that progress.
Starting a course, making progress in your business, or simply managing to get through a difficult day are crucial Stress Management Tips You Need As A Business Owner to maintain your sanity and drive.
When I look at myself today, going back to school and running my own business are things the woman I used to be may have found difficult to imagine.
But every big achievement begins with small steps, so don’t despise your little beginnings.
-
Give Yourself Time to Heal

Healing isn’t always immediate, and some days you may feel strong while other days you may feel like you are back where you started.
Don’t beat yourself up when that happens. Growth isn’t always a straight line, and you need to give yourself grace.
You have survived things that once made you think you wouldn’t survive, and the fact that you are still here matters.
Don’t rush your healing simply because someone else’s journey seems faster than yours.
Take your time, keep moving forward, and take life one day at a time.
-
Keep Trusting God Even When You Cannot See the Way
This is one of the biggest lessons my own journey has taught me.
There were times when I couldn’t see how things would work out.
I didn’t know how I would pay the next bill, what my future would look like, or how some of my dreams would ever become reality.
But when I look back now, I can see that God was working even during the seasons when I couldn’t see what He was doing.
He often sent help through people acting out timeless Bible Verses About Being Kind to Others.
I have gone from simply trying to survive to going back to school and running my own business.
I am still growing, still learning, and still trusting God, but now I understand that a difficult season is not the same thing as a hopeless future.
Keep praying, keep working, keep learning, keep believing, and keep taking those small steps.
God can still do something beautiful with your story.
Final Thought
If there is one thing I want you to take away from my story, it is this: please don’t give up because of what your life looks like today.
I know what it feels like to be young, overwhelmed, carrying responsibilities, struggling financially, and wondering what the future holds.
I know what it feels like to ask, “What am I living for?” But I also know what it feels like to discover hope again.
For me, that hope began when I turned my heart toward God.
I started praying, worshipping, studying His Word, going to church, and surrendering my life to Jesus.
Little by little, God began to remould me and help me see myself differently.
Today, I am still not where I want to be, but I am no longer where I used to be.
I have gone back to school, and I am running my own business.
I am raising my daughter, and I am still trusting God with the future.
My life is not perfect, but my perspective is different.
I now know that my circumstances don’t have the final say over my life.
The woman who once wondered what she was living for now has dreams she is pursuing.
She also has a purpose she is discovering, and a God she can always run to.
So if you are currently stressed, overwhelmed, lonely, or struggling with depression, please remember that your present situation is not necessarily your final destination.
Take one day at a time. Ask for help when you need it. Take care of yourself.
Surround yourself with people who genuinely care about you.
And if you believe in God, take your burdens to Him. You may not understand everything happening in your life right now, but don’t assume that God has forgotten you.
Sometimes the chapter you are crying through today will become the testimony you thank God for tomorrow.
Keep going and believe.
Keep taking one step at a time. Your story is not over yet.
